  • I have owned Europa #460352 since the fall of 2002. I purchased it from Bill Truesdale of Bensenville,Il. Bill traded his Elva Porsche Flat fan for the Europa in 1969. Bill raced it in SCCA Dproduction and came in fourth at the SCCA National Championship in 1972.
  • He then decided to completely rebuild and modify the car. The body was removed and converted to S2 specs. He fabircated a new front cross member and front control arms. He also converted the rear hubs to Corvair axles. He fabricated a complicated roll cage and made many other improvements.
  • Then like a lot of projects it fell to time and money constraints of a Husband and Father. It sat in Bill's machine shop for 30 years.
  • The car was originally white and Bill painted it red.
  • When I purchased the car the body was on the frame and the instruments were in the dash but basically everything else needed to be done. Front and rear suspension. Brake lines and wiring. It was a a lot of work.
  • I currently am racing the Europa with VSCDA and Midwest Council. It has a Renault wedge motor and 4 speed trans. It has been both a frustrating and fun experience.
  • I am currently trying to fit rear discs as the orginal drums, even with Porterfield Carbo Kevlar shoes, are inadequate.

22k miles, stored for approx 30 years, started and ran last year, I puchased it from a 87 year old man who kept it in his barn, I do not know much about this type of car, the car has no visable rust the body is original paint and every else but maybe not wheels, the auto is in great shape dry rotted door seals cracked windshield (he dropped a rim on it) throttle cable came loose emergancy brake cable looks like it is disconnected, speedo cable looks broke, fuel pump has been changed, starter solenoid has been changed, wood interior looks great but dirty plastic side windows are removable but faded, it is only missing one emblem from the outside rear panel, seats look good but dirty.

Update 3/13/07: I was able to bring 0460497 back to life this weekend. I made several trips around the neighberhood and most everthing works well. The clutch was stuck and after eliminating the cable as the problem I disassembled. This was disappointing since I had just reassembled the front and rear end with new bearings, bushings, ujoints, bolts and paint. It turned out the problem was much easier to solve than I had thought. I discovered that my throwout bearing was fine, but the pressure plate and disk had rusted to the flywheel. After separating, sanding and lubricating everything works well. The best part was NO additional $$$$$$.

460497 is really running great. The Stebro exhaust and two stage Weber downdraft sound fantastic. Acceleration is much better then I thought. The minor bad news is that my alternator has 0 output and radiator fan is rusted solid.

Update 3/27/07: I continue to make good progress on my rolling resto of 460497. I now have all electrical lights, gages and fans working. Speedometer is still inop. I've also rewrapped the wiring harness and replaced a few wires that had rubbed raw on the frame tunnel and shorted out. Luckly these were red and a blue wires without stripes. Looks very clean and organized. When I started I had individual, albeit original wires, going everywhere.

Most of my inop electrical devices were because of corroded electrical connectors and bad ground connections. I think this is because alot of the connectors were disconnected for some time. For the round connectors I used a round wire brush used to clean gun or pistol barrels. Wire brush the male end and circular wire brush the female; plugged everything together and now I have all the lights including the blinkers. My S1 doesn't have backup lights but the wiring is there. The wiring diagram was exactly the same as my car wiring, which made things very easy to sort out.

It appears that my alternator is inop. I replaced it with a Renault R17ts alternated which bolted right up after I exchanged the pulleys. Only 3 volt output so I cheched the VR. The VR had some internal corrostion and the contacts (points) were corroded shut so I cleaned it up a bit. I still don't think I'm charging but the output voltage is now 12+ volts. I'll have to do some more checking.

I've also replaced my cooling fan but that is another story.
