I was visiting your site and noticed the Vintage Photos section. I don’t know if anyone is interested, but I thought I’d send you some photos of the Europa S2 I raced in the late ‘70s in the San Francisco Region SCCA. In 1977 the Europa was in DP and moved to EP in 1978. I also included some earlier autocross photos.

Received 10/1/10 from Charles Youens.

I have recently been searching the web to try and rediscover the whereabouts of GKN47D, and stumbled onto your site.
I worked at Lotus Componants on the Mark 47 line from 1967 for about a years or so, and would have been responsible for building some of the cars in your registry. I was in the department at the time GKN47D was built, but I did not help build that one. I was a mere lad of twenty one and had moved from Cheshunt to Norfolk with my young family and feel confident to say that the four and a half years I worked at Lotus were the best years of my working life.
Looking through the photo's in the registry takes me back to 1967 and as the cars were finished, usualy one per week they were road tested on the test track. Sometimes John Miles would test them but on other occasions Malcolm Page, a senior mechanic would do the job.
They were all finished in white so all looked much the same leaving the factory. I can't remember anything about chassis numbers but I remember one customer's name which I did not notice in the registry, Simon De Latere, did you ever come across this guy?
I have two photo's of Mark 47's which I am attaching, one on the Lotus test track and the other outside Componants front door (The first two photos below.. Jerry.). The guy in the overalls is Peter Brand (now deceased) who also tested the vehicles and I am second from the left. I even had hair in those days.
I am in my middle sixties now and love to look back to those days which were exciting as well as having a body that worked properly. I hope you find this a little bit interesting and if you think I could be of any help with your work from all those years ago please let me know.
Yours sincerely
Charles Youens.

"What ever happened this Europa? the Huffaker/Gary Rodriguez 2nd Place ARRC in 1973? The attached photo is from Blackhawk Farms in Rockton IL in 1974 or 75. I was racing a C/P Elan (photo attached) at that time and raced against the Europa on 2 occasions best I can recall. The Europa was then driven by Jeff Jankewiecz(?) from Chicago."

This Europa 47 (may be 47GT-57 or 47GT-60) was driven in this race by Mike Rahal, Bobby Rahals' father.
Bobby Rahal also drove this car, but apparently not during this race.

Anybody know which 62 this is? - Jerry

"Here is a photo of a modified Europa at a hillclimb in Wellington, New Zealand sometime in the mid 70's. It is the Palmer Head hillclimb which was last run in about 1980. The top of the hill is now a housing estate, but the lower part of the track where this photo was taken is still there today. In the background is the entry to the Wellington harbour and Barretts Reef. It looks calm here, but in 1968 a severe storm forced the inter-island ferry 'Wahine' onto the reef with the loss of the ship and 51 lives. It was a wonderful little hillclimb though!

"I found this odd attempt at a Spanish version of the Europa - I think this is a prototype made in 1972. It was made by a company called Hispano-Aleman (Spanish-German) and was to be called the Castilla.

The same company quite successfully built a version of the S4 Lotus Seven with moulds and jigs bought from Caterham I suspect. They called that one the Mallorca. Varying reports of 60 - 200 Mallorcas were built but I think only the one prototype Castilla - maybe obvious when you look at it! Both cars had a SEAT 1430 engine.

Just thought you might be interested.

Cheers

"I have attached some pictures of the last 3 Europa cars to be sold in kit car form from Lotus. Keracolor had a very close working relationship with Lotus cars in the 70’s and even made spoilers for them. A deal was done with Lotus for the 3 yellow cars to appear in the Keracolor brochures, the cars became quite famous in the 1970s & appeared at a number of events across the UK . There are more pictures and details on our web site http://www.keracolor.com/history/history.html on the history, brochure & and Ebay page.
